2016 Kia Sportage vs 2016 Hyundai Tucson
Serving St. Petersburg, Tampa, and Largo
As any industry expert will tell you, the crossover sports utility vehicle (SUV) segment is an overcrowded and intensely competitive market. This is especially true for the compact sub-division, where shoppers look for something that feels and drives like a family-oriented four-door sedan, while maintaining some of the characteristics of a rugged SUV. Jockeying for top position are the Kia Sportage and the Hyundai Tucson, which have evolved to become two of the best choices in the compact crossover SUV market. However, the Kia Sportage has been around longer, with a 1993 debut date. (The Tucson did not show up until 2004.) And in three key aspects, the 2016 Sportage, which kicks of the nameplate’s fourth generation of production, edges out the 2016 Tucson, which is the first entry of the vehicle’s third production cycle.
Interior
One of such aspects involves the interior, which is more than a place that accommodates occupants. Ideally, the driver and passengers should feel comfortable and enjoy being in the vehicle. And a good way to ensure that is to equip the vehicle with a formidable stereo system to keep everyone entertained. The standard for most trims of the Sportage and Tucson is a six-speaker stereo system with AM/FM radio, CD player with MP3 playback capability, and steering wheel-mounted controls. However, when you go with the Kia SUV, you have the option of switching the standard sound system with a 13-speaker Infinity Audio System, which includes a subwoofer and external amplifier for deeper bass, full mid-range, and crispy clear highs. The Infinity set-up also comes with HD Radio for high-definition digital sound, with lessened noise or static.
Performance
The 2016 Kia Sportage has the advantage of engine power. If you go with the base-level LX trim, your SUV will be powered by a 2.4-liter inline-four cylinder engine (I4) that produces 182 horsepower at 6,000 revolutions per minute (RPM) and 177 foot-pounds (lb-ft) of torque at 4,000 RPM. With its specs, the Kia Sportage engine packs a lot of punch, without sacrificing fuel efficiency. By contrast, the base-level engine available on the 2016 Hyundai Tucson is a 2.0-liter I-4 with an output of 164 horsepower at 6,200 RPM and 151 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 RPM.
Technology
With time, the technology used on vehicles have advanced. And their security systems are no exception. These days—in addition to air bags, anti-lock braking, and electronic stability systems—it’s normal for vehicles to have a comprehensive electronic security system to keep thieves away. Included with the security system on the 2016 Kia Sportage is an engine immobilizer, which prevents the engine from running unless the correct key is present. On the other hand, the security system of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson is missing this crucial feature.
