Serving St. Petersburg, Tampa, and Largo

The 2016 Kia Optima is an affordable mid-sized sedan with a sporty attitude. Two popular trims include the LX and the EX. Deciding between them is part of the fun. Here's a quick comparison guide to help as you narrow down your options.

Performance

The base engine for both models is a smart 2.4-liter four-cylinder unit. This powertrain generates 185 horsepower and 178 lb.-ft. of torque. It also earns 35 mpg highway. If you choose the 2016 Kia Optima LX 1.6T, you step up to the turbo, which increases torque to 195 lb.-ft. This smart powertrain earns 39 mpg highway. Clearly you can save at the pump whichever model you choose. The standard transmission is a six-speed automatic, but a seven-speed automated clutch transmission is paired with the turbo.

Appearance

The LX is a value package on handsome 16-inch alloy wheels. The cabin is packed with full power accessories including a six-way power-adjusting driver's seat with power lumbar. For even more comfort, the driver has a tilt-telescopic steering wheel. The large trunk is quickly expanded with a 60/40 rear seatback. On the dash, you'll find a five-inch central display that controls your Bluetooth audio streaming. Other tech standards include a USB port, a CD player, and satellite radio capability. When you opt for the convenience package, you get laminated front door windows and power-fold, power-heat mirrors. If you step up to the turbo, you get these package features and push button start. The LX 1.6T Tech package adds dual-zone climate control and rear AC vents. You also get the navigation system with eight-inch touchscreen, Uvo infotainment features, and HD radio.

The EX rides on 17-inch alloy wheels and wears upgraded LED running lights. Much dressier than the base LX, the cabin has leather seats. Most LX 1.6T standards are part of the EX standard package as well. You also get a heated steering wheel, rear AC vents and dual-zone climate control. The Premium package adds the navigation touchscreen, interior lighting, and a panoramic sunroof. This well-appointed cabin also has heated/ventilated front seats and adds a power-adjusting front passenger seat. With the Premium Audio package, Kia includes a Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system, rear window shades, and heated rear seats.

Safety

Declared a Top Safety Pick Plus in 2016, the 2016 Optima is poised to take care of the American family. LX and EX shoppers can add a rear cross-traffic alert and a blind-spot monitor. Other crash avoidance options include a forward collision system with emergency automatic braking and a lane departure warning. In addition to the standard rearview camera, Kia offers a 360-degree surround-view camera.
