Although comparatively new to the compact car segment, the Kia Forte sedan has quickly made a name for itself by offering much more than fuel economy. Now more than midway through its second production cycle, the 2017 edition of the Forte sedan gets a new facelift with restyled exterior lights. Plus, a new trim, the sporty mid-level S, joins the other two variants: the base-level LX on one end and the top-level EX on the other end.

Powering the 2017 Kia Forte sedan is a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine. However, there is a major difference between the one on the LX and the S and the one on the EX. The LX and S use an Atkinson-Cycle version of the I4, which is designed to increase efficiency; fuel economy on either trim peaks at 29/38 mpg. The Atkinson Cycle I4 produces 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand, the engine on the EX produces up to 17 more horsepower with additional torque while providing a peak fuel economy of 25/33 mpg.

The 2017 Kia Forte sedan is designed as a compact four-door sedan with enough seating for up to five people. Passenger volume without the optional sunroof is measured at 96.2 cubic feet, and 95 cubic feet with it. Its 14.9 cubic feet of cargo space can be expanded by folding down the rear seatback. Upgrading to the S trim swaps the woven cloth seat trim with black sports-style cloth covering, and the EX has additional front-seat heating capability and leather seat trim.

On the 2017 Kia Forte sedan, entertainment is provided at the base level by a four-speaker stereo system that includes SiriusXM satellite radio. The S and EX come with a six-speaker stereo system, with a 7-inch color touchscreen display, as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for controlling the head unit with your smartphone. Other standard interior conveniences include remote keyless entry, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free phone calls, and steering wheel-mounted controls. Upgrade to the S to get cruise control, an Active Eco system for boosting fuel efficiency, and a 3.5-inch TFT LCD meter display. The EX stands alone with its dual-zone automatic climate control and an engine-start push button that is accompanied by a smart key and engine immobilizer.
